“Teach Me.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become one of the most successful franchises of all time and with their upcoming “Captain America: Civil War” releasing this month, a new spectrum of the MCU is finally being introduced. Doctor Strange is this franchise’s first forray into the realm of magic but the success of this teaser is how it focus on this character’s story first and then hits you with glimpses of its mind-bending visuals.

Academy Award Nominee Benedict Cumberbatch is Stephen Strange and in this trailer we see glimpses of how his life has fallen apart, a horrendous car crash that has left his hands damaged, and the surgeon goes on a spiritual quest. One of the best elements of this trailer was its jump cuts showing Strange’s drastic changes, a surgeon holding up his hands after washing jump cuts to a desperate bearded man holding up his hands in the same way but one can notice the extreme damage to them. The trailer then hits you with the magic by showing Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One punching the soul out of Stephen Strange.

The trailer then presents the world that Strange and the audience will explore which boasts a talented cast and impressive insane visual effects. My favourite shot of this trailer was of Mads Mikkelsen’s character making the whole world around him transform like a kaleidoscope, the fact that Marvel can showcase these type of visuals already makes me excited for what the final product will be. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams make quick appearances as well and the film showcases some impressive cinematography by the standards of most Marvel films.

The things that goes against the teaser are its similarities to other films. Strange’s quest bares resemblance to Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, Tilda Swinton’s scenes and narration reminded me of Morpheus from The Matrix and the money shot of the cities bending in on each other look liked Inception on Acid. These are amazing films to take reference from and this is just a teaser but I hope that the next trailer is able to show me what is really unique and makes Doctor Strange its own film.
